Stripe Setup

Connect Stripe to accept online card payments from clients — payment links on invoices, client portal payments, saved cards, and automatic payment plan collection.

Your clients' payments, not your subscription

This page covers your practice charging its clients through Stripe. Your Praxi subscription billing is separate and managed under Settings → Subscription.

ABNAustralian Business Number
Bank accountAustralian bank account for payouts
Praxi permissionsPractice owner or practice manager

Connecting Stripe

  1. Go to Settings → Integrations
  2. Find the Stripe card and click Connect with Stripe
  3. You're taken to Stripe's secure hosted onboarding
  4. Enter (or confirm) your business details, ABN, identity verification, and payout bank account on Stripe's pages
  5. When Stripe finishes, you're returned to Praxi
  6. The Stripe card shows the connection as active once Stripe has enabled charges for your account
Verification can take time

Stripe verifies your identity and business details before enabling charges. Most accounts are enabled quickly, but Stripe may ask for extra documents — if the connection shows outstanding requirements, click through to Stripe to complete them.

Managing the connection

Open the Stripe card at Settings → Integrations to:

  • Check whether charges are enabled
  • Open your Stripe Dashboard for payouts, disputes, and detailed transaction records
  • Disconnect Stripe (in the danger zone of the management drawer)

Taking Payments

Once connected:

  • Invoices — payment links are included when you send invoices, and clients can pay from the client portal
  • Payment plans — instalments collect automatically from the client's saved card
  • In person — pair a Stripe Terminal reader under Settings → Financial → Payment gateways to take card-present payments

Card on file

Card-on-file behaviour (whether clients can save cards, consent requirements, and expiry notifications) is configured under Settings → Financial → Payment gateways on the Online Payments tab. Cards are tokenised by Stripe — Praxi never stores card numbers.

Fees

Stripe charges its published Australian processing fees per transaction, which appear in your Stripe Dashboard. See Stripe's pricing page for current rates.

No card surcharges

From 1 October 2026, the Visa, Mastercard and eftpos networks each introduce no-surcharge rules for prepaid, debit and credit cards on their networks (RBA Payments System Board decision, March 2026). Those rules sit in scheme rules and merchant contracts and are enforced by the networks and payment service providers, not the ACCC. Until then, ACCC rules still cap any surcharge at your cost of acceptance.

Praxi does not offer surcharge configuration and hard-zeros pass-through on and after that date — processing fees are absorbed by the practice. Cover them in your service prices instead. Official: ACCC card surcharges.

Payouts and Reconciliation

Stripe deposits your takings to your nominated bank account on the payout schedule set in your Stripe Dashboard.

In Praxi:

  1. Billing → Payments shows each payment as it's recorded
  2. Billing → Settlements shows settlement activity
  3. Billing → Reconciliation matches payments against your records

For payout-level detail (dates, amounts, fees per payout), use your Stripe Dashboard.

Refunds

Process refunds from the payment record in Praxi — the refund flows back through Stripe to the client's original card. Refunds of the Stripe processing fee follow Stripe's own policy.

Troubleshooting

Connection incomplete

If the Stripe card shows outstanding requirements after onboarding, Stripe still needs information from you:

  1. Go to Settings → Integrations and open the Stripe card
  2. Resume onboarding, or open your Stripe Dashboard
  3. Complete the outstanding verification items

Payments failing

  1. Confirm charges are enabled on the Stripe card
  2. Check the payment's error detail — card declines come from the client's bank
  3. Check your Stripe Dashboard for account-level issues (e.g. paused payouts)

Alternatives and Companions

Praxi also supports Tyro (EFTPOS terminals with Medicare EasyClaim and HealthPoint) and Square (terminal payments). Many practices combine Stripe for online payments with Tyro for in-person EFTPOS and claiming. See Payment Gateways for a comparison.
