Payment Gateways (Stripe/Tyro/HICAPS)

Praxi integrates with Stripe, Tyro, Square, and HICAPS for payment processing. This guide covers setup, choosing between providers, transaction fees, and PCI compliance.

Stripe Setup

  1. Open Integrations from the Practice menu and click Connect with Stripe on the Stripe card
  2. Complete Stripe's secure hosted onboarding (business details, ABN, payout bank account) — you're returned to Praxi when it finishes
  3. The connection shows as active once Stripe has enabled charges for your account
  4. Optionally connect a Stripe Terminal reader for in-person payments under Settings > Financial > Payment gateways

See Stripe Setup for the full walkthrough.

info

Stripe supports online payments (payment links, client portal), in-person payments (Stripe Terminal), and recurring payments (payment plans). It is the most versatile option for practices that need all three.

Tyro Setup

  1. Run the Tyro setup wizard from Settings > Integrations (Merchant ID, API key, API secret, claiming options) — see Tyro Setup
  2. Navigate to Settings > Financial > Payment gateways and select the EFTPOS Terminals tab
  3. Click Add Terminal and enter the Tyro Terminal ID and your Merchant ID
  4. Test the connection with a small transaction
  5. Your Tyro terminal is now integrated

HICAPS Setup

  1. Navigate to Settings > Financial > Payment gateways and select the Health Fund Claiming tab
  2. Pair your HICAPS terminal with Praxi using the terminal pairing flow
  3. Test the connection with a test eligibility check
  4. Your HICAPS terminal is now integrated for private health fund claiming
info

HICAPS terminals are used specifically for private health fund claiming. For general EFTPOS payments, use Tyro or Stripe Terminal.

Square Setup

  1. Navigate to Settings > Financial > Payment gateways
  2. Connect your Square account using the Connect Square sign-in flow
  3. Pair your Square Terminal with Praxi
  4. Square then appears as a payment tab when recording payments

The Fees & Reporting tab on the same page summarises gateway fees across providers.

Card payment surcharging

Until 30 September 2026, ACCC rules still allow a surcharge only up to the practice’s cost of acceptance for that payment method. From 1 October 2026, Visa, Mastercard and eftpos introduce no-surcharge rules (RBA Payments System Board decision, March 2026) — merchants must not add a separate card surcharge on those designated networks.

Praxi does not expose surcharge configuration and hard-zeros pass-through on and after 1 October 2026. Cover card processing costs in your service prices and show the total to clients at payment. Official: ACCC card surcharges · RBA surcharging conclusions.

Testing Connections

You can test your gateway connection without processing a real payment:

  1. Go to Settings > Financial > Payment gateways and select the relevant gateway tab
  2. Click Test Connection
  3. Praxi creates a 1-cent test payment intent (no actual charge)
  4. A success or failure result is displayed

For Stripe, you can also check your account status including whether charges and payouts are enabled.

PCI Compliance

Praxi's integrated payment gateways (Stripe, Tyro, HICAPS) handle card data directly, meaning Praxi never stores, processes, or transmits raw card numbers. This significantly reduces your PCI compliance obligations.

  • Card details are entered directly on the terminal or payment form
  • Praxi only receives a payment confirmation token
  • No card numbers are stored in the Praxi database
  • API keys and secrets are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM

Testing Payments

Before going live:

  1. Use Stripe's test mode to process simulated transactions
  2. Verify invoices are correctly marked as paid
  3. Test refund workflows
  4. Confirm receipts generate correctly
  5. Switch to live mode when satisfied

Who can manage payment gateways

Only practice owners can connect and configure payment gateway integrations. Practitioners (and interns, under supervision) process payments and view transaction history for their own clients. Practice owners, practice managers, and accountants can process refunds and view transaction history across the practice.
