Set up Medicare
Open the Medicare entry or Settings > Medicare to start or resume setup. Until Medicare is ready, both open the same wizard. Afterwards, the Medicare entry opens the Medicare app; Settings is where you adjust locations, provider numbers, claiming preferences and how you send claims.
Praxi is completing Services Australia conformance testing for Medicare Online Claiming. Production claiming becomes available once Services Australia grants the Notice of Integration (NOI). This page describes the setup workflow so your practice can prepare.
The six steps below cover sending claims through Praxi, the recommended option. You do not need a PRODA account for this path.
1. Before you start
Choose how you will send claims:
- Through Praxi (recommended): Praxi manages the connection to Services Australia. You do not register, link or renew anything in PRODA.
- Through Tyro: choose this if your practice already claims through Tyro. Connect Tyro, then lodge an HW027 using the Location ID Tyro gave you.
- Use your own PRODA instead: a secondary option if your practice needs to hold its own credentials. See Use your own PRODA.
For the Praxi path, have each practitioner's provider numbers and your practice's bank account details for bulk billing ready. Each practitioner will need to sign one HW027 form per provider number. Check processing with Services Australia; Praxi tells you when your location is linked.
2. Locations
Add or review each practice location, then select Get Location ID. Praxi issues the Location ID instantly. It is also called a Minor ID and goes on every HW027 for that location.
Each location needs its own ID. Practitioners at the same location use that location's ID; do not share an ID across different locations.
3. Practitioners and provider numbers
Add each practitioner's Medicare provider number against each location where they claim. Provider numbers are location-specific: check that every number matches Services Australia's records for that practitioner and location. Praxi checks the provider number's check character as you enter it.
4. HW027 for each provider number
Download HW027 details to copy for each provider number and location. Use it to complete the official Services Australia HW027. The practitioner must review the official terms and privacy notice, then sign and date Q28 themself. Do not sign or lodge the Praxi details sheet.
At Q3, leave the RA field blank through Praxi; enter your practice's PRODA RA number on own PRODA; ask Tyro for its instructions on that path. Check the Location ID at Q12 and complete the appropriate practice or organisation branch. At Q23, check the bank institution, BSB, account number and holder; at Q24, select Medicare bulk bill and DVA payments. The account must accept EFT and must not be exclusively for NDIS funding. Unregistered providers also complete HW052.
Return the signed official form using its current instructions, keep a copy, then mark I've lodged it in Praxi. Check processing with Services Australia. See Lodge an HW027 for the question-by-question guide.
5. How you'll claim
Record your bulk-billing agreement, including its agreement number and effective date. It covers the Location IDs in your setup. Bulk-bill claims wait until the agreement is recorded.
For the detailed steps, see Record how you'll claim.
Record consent before every bulk-billed claim
Record Assignment of Benefit Consent (DB4) in Praxi before every bulk-billed claim, including claims through Tyro. Choose Consent checkbox, Patient types their name, Verbal confirmation or Patient unable to sign as appropriate. Verbal assignment is accepted for services through 30 June 2027; use a digital method for services from 1 July 2027. Your practice agreement does not replace this client consent. See Record bulk-bill consent.
6. Check and go live
Once a location is linked, run one patient check per location using a client who has consented. Record the client's consent in the wizard before running the check. Use their Medicare details in Praxi; this checks the connection and their details without submitting a claim for a service.
A successful check activates pending provider links at that location. Run another check when a provider link is pending. Praxi shows which providers and locations are ready. Locations still waiting remain visible, with the reason shown in setup and on affected invoices.
Follow Check and go live for each location's check and waiting states.
Use your own PRODA
Choose Use your own PRODA instead in Before you start if your practice needs its own connection. The wizard adds Your PRODA organisation and Connect Praxi in PRODA. Follow Use your own PRODA for those extra steps and your renewal responsibility.
Use Tyro
Choose Through Tyro in the first step to open Tyro setup. Connect Tyro and complete its provider approval process. The Tyro steps are Before you start, Practitioners and provider numbers, Connect Tyro, HW027, How you'll claim and Check and go live. You skip Praxi's Location ID step.
Each practitioner still needs an HW027 for every provider number at each location, using the Location ID Tyro gave you. Praxi does not store that ID, so copy it onto the official form before signing and lodging it. Mark the form as lodged in the HW027 step. You can continue setup and claiming while the form is incomplete, but Tyro may reject claims until Services Australia processes it. Record DB4 in Praxi before every bulk-billed claim. Follow the Tyro setup guide for the connection steps.
