Tyro setup
Pair your Tyro EFTPOS terminal with Praxi so you can take card payments and refunds on the terminal from an invoice.
Praxi is completing Services Australia conformance testing for Medicare Online Claiming. Production claiming becomes available once Services Australia grants the Notice of Integration (NOI). This page describes the workflow so your practice can prepare.
Before you start
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Tyro account | An active Tyro merchant account |
| Tyro terminal | A Tyro EFTPOS terminal set up by Tyro |
| Praxi permissions | Practice owner or practice manager for setup |
For terminal pairing, you do not enter a Tyro password or API key. Pair each terminal using the Merchant ID (MID) and Terminal ID (TID) it shows.
If you don't have Tyro yet, apply at tyro.com/health.
Connect Medicare through Tyro health
Terminal pairing and Tyro Health Medicare claiming are separate connections. For Medicare, open the Medicare app and choose Through Tyro in Before you start. Follow Set up Medicare.
- Add Practitioners and provider numbers.
- Open Connect Tyro and enter the details from your Tyro Health account. An owner or manager can save the connection.
- Complete Tyro's provider approval. Praxi skips its own Location ID step. You still lodge an HW027 for each provider number at each location, using Tyro's Location ID, not a Praxi Location ID, and mark it lodged in the HW027 step.
- Save your preferences in How you'll claim. Tyro handles the bulk billing agreement.
- Open Check and go live and follow its status. There is no per-location patient check in Praxi on this path; the step completes when Tyro has been checked.
Before every bulk-billed claim, record DB4 consent in Praxi using the invoice claim panel. Connecting Tyro or pairing a terminal does not record a client's assignment of benefit.
Add your merchant IDs
Each Tyro merchant ID pays into one bank account. If different practitioners are paid into different accounts, add one merchant for each and choose who belongs to it.
- Open Integrations and choose Manage on the Tyro card
- Open Merchants and choose Add merchant
- Enter a name, the merchant ID and the practitioners it pays
- Choose Save
Pair a terminal
Pairing is saved in the browser you pair from. Pair again on each computer that takes payments.
- On the terminal, open Menu → Configuration → Integrated EFTPOS → Pair with POS. The terminal shows its MID and TID
- In Praxi, open the Tyro settings, enter the MID and TID, and choose Commence pairing
- Press Start on the terminal
Praxi shows Paired when it's done.
Take a payment
- Open the invoice and choose Take payment
- Choose Terminal, check the amount and choose Send to terminal
- The client taps, inserts or swipes their card on the terminal
Praxi records the payment only after the terminal approves it. If Praxi says the result is unknown, check the terminal before trying again.
Refunds work the same way from the payment's Refund option: the client presents their card on the terminal.
Praxi doesn't add card surcharges to terminal payments.
Settlement and reconciliation
Tyro settles EFTPOS takings to your bank account, typically the next business day. Compare Finance > Payments > Settlements in Praxi with your Tyro reports.
Terminal care
- Process end-of-day settlement on the terminal each evening and check totals match Praxi
- Keep spare 57 mm thermal paper rolls accessible
- Never leave a terminal unattended mid-transaction; secure devices overnight
- Accept terminal firmware updates promptly
Card data is encrypted end-to-end by Tyro and PINs are only ever entered on the terminal. Card numbers are not stored in Praxi.
Fees
Tyro's transaction fees and terminal rental vary by plan and volume. Contact Tyro or check your merchant agreement for exact pricing.
Troubleshooting
Pairing failed
- Check the MID and TID match the terminal's Pair with POS screen
- Check the terminal and computer both have internet access
- Try pairing again
Payments go to the wrong bank account
Check which merchant each practitioner belongs to under Merchants.
Terminal offline
- Check the internet connection at the terminal
- Restart the terminal
- Contact Tyro support if it persists
