Internship Logbook
The Internship Logbook helps psychology interns and their supervisors track the hours, competencies, and supervision requirements of the 5+1 internship pathway, aligned with AHPRA and the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) guidelines effective December 2025.
Overview
The 5+1 pathway requires provisionally registered psychologists to complete a structured internship under supervision. Praxi's logbook automates much of the record-keeping by pulling data directly from your practice management activities — appointments, clinical notes, and supervision sessions.
| Capability | Description |
|---|---|
| Hour tracking | Automatic logging of client contact hours, supervision hours, and professional development |
| Competency framework | PsyBA core competency domains with evidence linking |
| Auto-population | Hours populated from appointments and supervision sessions recorded in Praxi |
| Supervisor sign-off | Supervisors review and endorse logbook entries digitally |
| Progress dashboard | Visual progress against PsyBA minimum requirements |
| Export for AHPRA | Generate formatted reports for registration applications |
Getting Started
Setting Up the Logbook
- Navigate to Development > Internship Logbook
- Click Set Up Logbook (first-time setup)
- Enter your internship details:
- Select your supervision relationship (this links to your supervisor)
- Internship start date
- Employment basis (full-time or part-time)
- Target hours (pre-filled with PsyBA defaults, adjustable)
- Praxi automatically creates progress records for all eight PsyBA competency domains
- Click Create Logbook
Your supervisor receives a notification to confirm the supervisory arrangement.
Linking Your Supervisor
If your supervisor uses Praxi, the logbook links directly to their account. They can:
- View your logbook entries in real time
- Endorse entries with a digital signature
- Add supervisory notes and feedback
- Track your progress against competency requirements
If your supervisor is external to the practice, you can invite them as a read-only reviewer.
Key Features
Hour Categories
The PsyBA 5+1 pathway requires specific hour categories. Praxi tracks each automatically.
| Category | Default Target | How Praxi Tracks It |
|---|---|---|
| Total practice hours | 1,500 | Sum of all logged practice activities |
| Direct client contact hours | 750 | Counted from completed appointments where you are the assigned practitioner |
| Supervision hours | 86 (at 1:17.5 ratio) | Counted from supervision sessions recorded in the Supervision module. At least 50% must be individual (1:1). |
| Professional development | As per PsyBA guidelines | Logged from CPD entries and Academy completions |
| Assessment administration | Included in client contact | Tagged from sessions involving assessment tools |
| Report writing | Included in practice hours | Logged manually or from time-tracked note sessions |
These default targets are based on PsyBA requirements for the 5+1 pathway. The supervision ratio is 1 hour of supervision per 17.5 hours of practice. Targets can be adjusted when setting up the logbook if your board or supervisor specifies different requirements. :::
Hours are only counted when the underlying appointment or supervision session is marked as completed. Draft or cancelled sessions are excluded. :::
Auto-Population from PMS
The logbook's key differentiator is auto-population. Rather than manually entering hours at the end of each week, Praxi pulls data from your clinical activity:
- Appointments — when you complete a session with a client, the contact hours are added to your logbook automatically
- Supervision sessions — when your supervisor records a supervision session, those hours appear in your logbook
- Note signing — signing a clinical note confirms the session occurred and locks the logbook entry
- CPD activities — completed Academy courses and logged CPD activities flow into your professional development tally
You can still add manual entries for activities not captured automatically (e.g., external training, conference attendance, peer consultation).
Competency Framework
The PsyBA core competency domains are built into the logbook. Link evidence to each competency as you progress through your internship.
| Domain | Description |
|---|---|
| Knowledge of the discipline | Psychological theory, research, and evidence base |
| Ethical, legal, and professional matters | Code of conduct, privacy, mandatory reporting, cultural safety |
| Psychological assessment and measurement | Administering, scoring, and interpreting assessments |
| Intervention strategies | Therapeutic interventions, treatment planning, outcome monitoring |
| Research and evaluation | Critical appraisal, evidence-based practice, evaluation |
| Communication and interpersonal relationships | Therapeutic relationship, report writing, professional communication |
| Working within a cross-cultural context | Cultural responsiveness, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health |
| Practice across the lifespan | Developmental considerations, age-appropriate practice |
For each domain, you can:
- Link completed client sessions as evidence
- Attach supervision notes discussing the competency
- Upload external evidence (certificates, reflective journals)
- Record self-assessment ratings
Supervisor Sign-Off
Supervisors review and endorse logbook entries on a regular basis (typically fortnightly or monthly):
- The supervisor opens the intern's logbook
- Reviews new entries since the last sign-off
- Verifies the hours and competency evidence
- Adds any supervisory comments
- Clicks Endorse to digitally sign the entries
Endorsed entries are locked and cannot be edited. If a correction is needed, a new adjustment entry is created with a reason.
Progress Dashboard
The dashboard provides a visual summary of your progress:
- Hour meters — progress bars for each hour category against PsyBA minimums
- Competency coverage — which domains have evidence linked and which need attention
- Timeline — projected completion date based on current pace
- Supervisor endorsement status — entries awaiting sign-off
External Supervisors
If your supervisor is not a Praxi user (e.g., an external supervisor at another practice), you can register them as an external reviewer:
- Navigate to Development > Internship Logbook > External Supervisors
- Add your external supervisor's details (name, registration number, contact)
- They can be invited to review and endorse logbook entries via a secure link
Leave Management
Record periods of leave during your internship:
- Navigate to Development > Internship Logbook > Leave
- Click Record Leave
- Enter the leave dates, type, and reason
- Leave periods are excluded from hour calculations and clearly marked in your logbook timeline
Direct Observation
Supervisors can record direct observation sessions (where they observe the intern conducting a session):
- The supervisor opens the intern's logbook
- Clicks Record Observation
- Documents the session observed, competencies assessed, and feedback
- The observation is linked to the relevant competency domains
Registrar Programs
For psychologists pursuing an area of practice endorsement (registrar pathway), Praxi includes a separate registrar program tracker:
- Navigate to Development > Internship Logbook > Registrar Programs
- Click Create Program and enter your endorsement area and program details
- Log registrar-specific entries (advanced practice hours, specialist supervision)
- Track progress against endorsement requirements
Export for AHPRA
When you apply for general registration, Praxi generates a formatted logbook export:
- Navigate to Development > Internship Logbook > Export
- Select the date range (typically the full internship period)
- Choose the export format (PDF for submission, CSV for your records)
- The export includes all endorsed entries, supervisor details, and competency evidence summaries
- Download and submit with your AHPRA application
